Major Waves of Expansion

The first significant enlargement occurred in 1952 when Greece and Turkey joined the alliance, followed by West Germany in 1955. The 1999 and 2004 Enlargements
In 1999, Hungary, the Czech Republic, and Poland became members, marking the first wave of former Eastern Bloc nations joining the alliance. This was followed by a much larger intake in 2004, often referred to as the "Big Bang," which included Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia, and Slovenia.
